Number of VN students continues to increase

27 January 2005

There has been a steady increase in the number of students enrolling onto the NVQ Veterinary Nursing course over the last few years.1,132 students enrolled in 2004, 1,004 during the previous year and 947 in 2002.

The rise in student numbers can be attributed to the fact that more and more training practices are being established. There are currently 1,400  listed Veterinary Nursing training practices in the UK compared with 1,309 this time last year and 1,057 the previous year.

Of the 1,132 students enrolled on the course, 789 in total sat the examinations with 60% passing the NVQ Level 2 examination and a marginally higher number, 62%, passing the NVQ3 examination. These results are very similar to the Winter 2003/2004 exam results and are displayed in the table below which is a comparison between the number of students sitting and passing the Winter examinations in 2004 and 2005.  It is worth noting that the pass rates for Winter exams are always slightly lower than the Summer exams as a large proportion of the candidates are re-sitting the exam.

When the Winter 2004/2005 examinations were published on the RCVS website recently, a record number of students logged onto the website to check their results. On busy days there is an average of 2,500 visitors to the RCVS website but on the day the NVQ2 and NVQ3 results were published the number of visitors soared to a record 4,300. This number was so unexpected it even caused a temporary jam on the newly remodelled RCVS website.
