The RCVS has developed and published a range of short animations and checklists to help the professions to better understand the Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP).

VetGDP, which was developed after a consultation with the UK veterinary professions, provides an effective period of workplace-based support focussed on the development of clinical and professional capabilities. It aims to help graduates to build confidence, reduce anxiety, and to become competent, resilient members of the veterinary team.

The programme must be completed by all veterinary graduates entering the profession for the first time, as well as any qualified vets who have been off the UK-Practising Register for more than 5 years. However, the latter group may apply for exemption in some circumstances. Overseas vets who have worked abroad since graduating and return to the UK with less than one year’s experience, are also required to complete it.

Whilst the VetGDP is primarily a graduate programme, it relies on practices and trained VetGDP Advisers, who work on a one-to one basis with those completing the programme, to provide vital support. Practices wishing to hire new graduates, will first need to become an RCVS approved Graduate Development practice or workplace.

In order to make the programme easier to understand for those undertaking it, as well as for individuals interested in becoming VetGDP advisers and practices looking to hire new graduates, we have created a series of short animations and checklists for each of the relevant parties. Each short animation covers everything you will need to know, and the checklists provide straightforward guidance to help you get started. These are for:

Additionally, there is a ‘VetGDP information to help you get started’ section, containing general information for all.

Further information on VetGDP can be found on the central RCVS VetGDP page. From this, you will be able to access all animations, checklists and further resources to help support you through your VetGDP journey, whether that be as a graduate, a vet returning to practice, as an employer, or if you are interested in becoming a VetGDP Adviser.
