Biography
A 2002 RVC graduate, James enjoyed supporting fellow professionals in their career development as a practitioner and practice owner. As a champion of collaborative working, he oversaw a precursor of BVD free England in the Peak District.
Moving to BCVA board, with a portfolio focussed on TB and government liaison, and then BVA officer roles helped him to further this impact. As BVA president, James’ theme was ‘keeping vets healthy’. This held resonance given his time in office covering both nationwide Covid lockdowns.
James’ areas of expertise lie in farm animal infectious disease, specifically bovine TB. He represents BVA on Defra’s TB partnership and has been closely involved in the development of Animal Health and Welfare Pathway for England, latterly as a member of the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England. James has spoken extensively on TB and other infectious diseases around the country, winning best practitioner presentation at BCVA congress twice. He now sits as an advisor on the technical board of the TB advisory service and has undertaken work directly for Welsh Government to identify ways to support chronic TB breakdown herds.
Additionally, James champions diversity and inclusivity in our profession. He has spoken about lived experience of neurodivergence as a dyslexic and shared ideas on improving accessibility of communications.
James teaches farm animal clinical skills at Nottingham vet school and is currently studying for a PGCHE.
