Dr Andrew Alexander Gardiner MRCVS

Biography

Dr Andrew Alexander Gardiner MRCVSAndrew qualified from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 1992 and went into general practice, obtaining the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2000. A ‘year out’ to pursue an interested and undertake a Masters in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine led to a PhD in the history of 20th century British veterinary education and practice at the University of Manchester, funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Andrew then joined the Dick Vet as a veterinary clinical lecturer (becoming senior lecturer). He has been at the Dick for 15 years and teaches across the curriculum, emphasising GP competences. He developed dentistry teaching at the Dick, including an innovative teaching collaboration with the Edinburgh Dental Institute. Andrew has written textbooks on clinical anatomy and general practice and contributes historical chapters to veterinary textbooks. He was a foundation diplomat for the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law subspecialty) and served on its examination committee for several years.

In 2009, Andrew started All4Paws, a student-led clinic for treating homeless people’s animals, which now operates from its own premises in central Edinburgh. This project gives students valuable experience in clinical management and contextualised veterinary care in an outreach setting, working with community partners in the housing, homelessness, and (human) health areas.

Away from work, Andrew is a keen clarinettist, owning too many instruments, and plays in a klezmer band. Other interests include walking the dogs, outdoors and creative writing.
