About the Practice Standards Scheme
Why join?
Over two-thirds of UK veterinary practice premises are already part of the voluntary RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS).
Practice teams tell us they have different reasons for joining, including the framework that it can provide for running a veterinary practice in areas such as patient and client protocols, health and safety, medicines management as well as new staff recruitment and induction.

Who runs the Scheme?
The Scheme is run by veterinary professionals for the profession.
Practice Standards Group
The Practice Standards Group (PSG) comprises representatives from the major veterinary and veterinary nursing organisations in the UK.
It is responsible for setting and reviewing the Scheme's standards, rules and inspection protocol, overseen by the Standards Committee (these recommendations being subject to ratification by RCVS Council).
PSS Assessors
PSS Assessors are veterinary surgeons or registered veterinary nurses, and carry out the assessment visits across the UK.
All assessors must be at least 5-years qualified as an MRCVS or RVN, be in full- or part-time veterinary practice (or have been so within the previous 3 years), and be approved as having suitable experience in the species area for undertaking assessments of each appropriate accreditation.
We recruit PSS Assessors based on their experience, attitude and desire to help practices improve their standards. They all undergo initial and ongoing training to ensure high and consistent standards of assessment, support and communication.
Review Group
The Review Group is a panel of assessors responsible for interpreting the Standards in order to resolve complex queries that arise during the assessment process.
It also considers matters that affect the assessment and accreditation process for practices, including requests to delay assessments or evidence submission deadlines due to extenuating circumstances.

The PSS team at the RCVS will be your day-to-day contacts if you have questions about the Scheme, the online system Stanley etc.
