Took the road less travelled in becoming a vet or VN? Share your story!
29 April 2025
There are many public misconceptions when it comes to getting into veterinary – particularly into vet school – including the belief that it is highly competitive and that you have to achieve straight A*s (or the equivalent) at A-level in order to get there.
As part of our widening participation work, we’ve been working to highlight the different routes into veterinary medicine or veterinary nursing for potential vets and VNs to help combat these myths and show that there are many different opportunities to get into the sector.
These case studies are then being used to help promote the sector to school aged children through our work with National Careers Week (which lasts year-round) as well as being published within the careers section of our website, and used in talks with schools and other outreach work. Most recently we spoke to Faynowsh, a veterinary medicine student at RVC who got into vet school via the BTEC route. You can find his case study on our ‘I want to become a vet’ page.
We have also published a number of veterinary nurse case studies, again designed to inspire more people to get into the sector. Similarly, these are also being used in all outreach work as well as on our ‘I want to become a veterinary nurse’ page.
Want to share your story of how you became a vet or VN? If you didn’t take any of the so-called ‘traditional’ routes, then we would love to hear from you. If you’re interested in sharing your story, contact our Outreach and Engagement Manager, Rosie Powley, on [email protected].
