Biography

Dr. Povea is CEO and Founder of the International School of Veterinary Surgery (ISVS), the Veterinary Institute of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and CEQVEMI – Veterinary Centre for Conventional and Minimally Invasive Surgery, where he serves as Chief of Surgery. He graduated as DVM from the University of Havana in 2002 and completed an MSc in Biochemistry, Genetic Manipulation and Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Sussex (UK) through a Chevening Scholarship in 2004.
He became a Member of the RCVS by examination in 2008 and achieved Membership in Small Animal Surgery (MANZCVS) in 2017. In 2022 he was awarded Fellowship in Human Minimally Invasive Surgery (F.MAS) by the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons at the University of South Florida, enriching comparative surgical insights that support a One Health approach to veterinary surgery.

Dr. Povea has contributed to the profession through surgical research, postgraduate education and international collaboration. He published the first comparative study of the GEA knot versus titanium clips in canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Veterinary Surgery, opening a new research line in extracorporeal techniques. He co-founded the LAOS Institute (Laparoscopic and Open Surgery Institute) to promote One Health surgical education.
