Practice by students - regulations

In your clinical training, you’ll get to perform some surgical treatments. The Veterinary Surgeons (Practice by Students) (Amendment) Regulations 1993 define what these are.

What you can do as a veterinary student

As a veterinary student, you can carry out:

  • Diagnostic tests under the direction or supervision of a registered veterinary surgeon
  • Medical treatment under the direction or supervision of a registered veterinary surgeon
  • Acts of veterinary surgery, including operations, under the direct and continuous supervision of a registered veterinary surgeon

Levels of supervision

Here’s a clear structure of the different supervision levels you’ll experience during your studies:

  • Direction - a registered vet gives you instructions for the procedure, but doesn't need to be physically present while you carry it out
  • Supervision - a registered vet is on the premises and available to help and advise you if needed
  • Direct and continuous supervision - a registered vet is physically present and giving you their undivided attention throughout the procedure

This graduated structure means you'll start with simpler procedures and gradually take on more complex work as your skills develop. It's designed to give you the best possible learning experience, while ensuring animal welfare and safety remain the top priority.
