Accrediting qualifications

The RCVS accredits the degrees and courses that train veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses, ensuring registrants have the skills and knowledge to practise safely.  This page provides further information on our accreditation processes and links to UK and international institutions that are currently accredited.

The RCVS is responsible for regulating the UK degrees and courses that qualify students to practise as veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. Our accreditation provides reassurance that education providers meet standards of quality and consistency. It also ensures registrants are prepared for the roles and responsibilities they will encounter in practice. This safeguards both the public and animals by making sure people who qualify have the skills and knowledge to practise safely and to the highest standards.

External review of the RCVS by ENQA

The European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) represents quality assurance agencies across Europe, promoting best practice and supporting members in meeting emerging challenges.

The RCVS was first reviewed by ENQA in 2018 and again in 2023, achieving membership that demonstrates its accreditation processes meet European standards. Membership also reflects a commitment to continuous improvement, external scrutiny, and international collaboration, including participation in ENQA forums, working groups, and leadership programmes.

Accrediting veterinary degrees

We are legally responsible for setting and monitoring the standards of veterinary degrees in the UK. This ensures that all veterinary registrants have the skills and knowledge required to join the Register. We also run the statutory exam for overseas-trained vets who want to practise in the UK.

Accrediting veterinary nursing courses

To become a registered veterinary nurse (RVN), students must complete an RCVS-accredited qualification. These qualifications include university degrees and qualifications from recognised UK awarding organisations

All accredited courses must meet the standards set by the Veterinary Nurses Council, which defines the skills and knowledge required to join the RVN Register.
