Workforce Project

Originally launched in autumn 2021 to address workforce shortages, the Workforce Project focuses on improving retention, attracting new professionals, and supporting those returning to the field.

Five years on, the veterinary workforce is growing stronger, but the project remains vital in sustaining this progress. With legislative reform on the horizon, the project encourages cross-industry collaboration and brings together our supportive, preventative upstream regulatory work, highlighting the importance of proactive approaches to maintaining a thriving veterinary profession.

Workforce Action Plan

In November 2021, we held a Workforce Summit which brought together 80 stakeholders from across the veterinary industry to explore how veterinary professionals could work together on tackling the workforce crisis.

From this, we developed the Workforce Action Plan - setting out the key areas in which the veterinary sector could work together to mitigate the impact of staff shortages.

The plan is centred around the seven ambitions which still underpin the ongoing work today.

These are:

Ambition one :

To shape leaders at all levels.

Ambition two :

Confidence, culture and recognition.

Ambition three :

Greater responsibility for veterinary nurses.

Ambition four :

Welcoming a modern way of working.

Ambition five :

General practice - a chosen pathway.

Ambition six :

An attractive career for everyone, including those who have left.

Ambition seven :

Improving client interaction and communication.
