Fellowship Week 2021

The RCVS Fellowship Week took place between 30 September - 7 October 2021, during which the variety and extent of the Fellowship’s knowledge-base was celebrated.

Online activities throughout the week included six Fellows of the Future student competition entries, and three Fellows in Focus presentations.

The week culminated with our virtual Fellowship Evening, where all new Fellows were formally admitted to the Fellowship.

A live stream of the evening ceremony will be viewable on this webpage and is open to all RCVS members and associates.

Fellowship Evening 

During the online event, 38 new Fellows who successfully applied to join the Fellowship this year were formally welcomed to the learned society by RCVS President, Dr Kate Richards and RCVS Fellowship Board Chair, Prof John Innes.

We also welcomed our keynote speaker, Professor Tim Spector, who delivered his talk titled: 'The Future of  Personalised Nutrition'.

Meet our new Fellows

During the ceremony, Fellowship awards were presented by the RCVS to those entering from the Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice, Meritorious Contributions to Knowledge, Meritorious Contributions to the Profession and Diploma of Fellowship by Thesis pathways. The list of new Fellows admitted this year can be found on our website. 

Keynote Speaker

Professor Tim SpectorTim Spector MD FMedSci FRSB, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College London and scientific co-founder of ZOE ltd, will be delivering his talk titled: The Future of  Personalised Nutrition. 

Professor Spector is the epidemiologist behind the ground-breaking Covid Symptom Study app, an innovation which directly influenced how the UK responded to the pandemic, and for the last 25 years has been studying a cohort of 12,000 twins in the largest nutrition intervention of its kind, which has shown we all react differently to the same foods.

Six veterinary undergraduates and recent graduates have delivered talks on their current academic research as part of our Fellows of the Future competition.

Fellows in Focus 

The 2021 Fellows in Focus talks delivered by three current RCVS Fellows; Professor Mandy Peffers, Dr Christopher Shales and Dr Joan Smyth, and covered different areas of research and expertise.

Professor Mandy Peffers FRCVS

Talk title: From Bovine Embryo Transfer Vet to Wellcome Trust Clinical Intermediate Fellow

Summary: Mandy will be discussing her unusual career path into academia and highlight some important factors to consider (such a collaborative networks, mentors, opportunities) when pursuing a veterinary research career in academia.

Dr Christopher Shales FRCVS

Talk title: The Integration of Webinars within our Practice.

Summary: Chris will summarise how he and the team at Willows Vets have taken advantage of society's growing familiarity with video-conferencing technology to maintain their contact with their colleagues, other practices and pet owners and how this has become a positive outcome of the past 18 months. Chris will consider the pros and cons of on-line webinars in a veterinary context and whether they will remain relevant as we begin to emerge from COVID-19 restrictions.

Dr Joan Smyth FRCVS

Talk title: Some Discoveries of Novel Diseases and Concepts through Diagnostic Veterinary Pathology

Summary: Sometimes during the course of anatomic pathology examinations of animals for routine diagnostic purposes, novel diseases or novel insights into disease pathogenesis are discovered. Throughout the talk, Joan identifies several examples of discoveries of novel diseases including; fatal bovine adenoviral enterocolitis, species specific circoviral infections in pigeons, geese, and herring gulls.
