Biography
After graduating from Glasgow Vet School and spending time in mixed veterinary practice in the UK, Simon undertook a PhD at the Royal Veterinary College, London. He then worked in research roles at the RVC and the Heart and Lung Research Institute at the Ohio State University Medical Center, before starting as a lecturer at the RVC and then moving to the University of Melbourne in 2007.
He is currently Professor of Pre-clinical Veterinary Sciences, and conducts research on inflammatory diseases, pharmacology and endocrinology in various species particularly horses. This includes a lot of studies on equine laminitis and metabolic syndrome.
To date, Simon has published more than a hundred papers in international peer-reviewed journals plus 3 book chapters, and holds 2 patents. He has worked extensively with pharmaceutical and feed companies, horseracing authorities and racing analytical laboratories. He was awarded the Dame Olga Uvarov award from the RCVS Trust in 2005 for his research and has been a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology since 2006.
Simon has served as Scientific Editor of The Veterinary Journal; Associate Editor of Domestic Animal Endocrinology and Animals; and has been an Associate Editor of the Australian Veterinary Journal for the last 11 years.
