Biography

Dr James Guthrie is one of Europe’s most highly qualified clinical veterinarians and the only UK vet to hold diplomate status in both small animal surgery and canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. He specialises in maximising patient outcomes through minimally invasive surgery, regenerative medicine, and rehabilitation, using advanced medical technologies. Graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2010 as top orthopaedics student, he completed a rotating internship at Northwest Surgeons, then two years in small animal practice, gaining the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Small Animal Surgery). Joining Fitzpatrick Referrals in 2013, he completed a surgical internship and a three-year residency, becoming a European College of Veterinary Surgeons diplomate in 2018 and RCVS-recognised specialist. He then undertook a sports medicine residency, becoming a diplomate of both the American (2021) and European (2022) Colleges of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a certified canine rehabilitation therapist. James trains interns and residents, lectures at the University of Surrey, has published research, and serves in leadership roles with BVOA and ECVSMR. He founded ExamVet, a coaching service for veterinary examinations, and became an RCVS Fellow in 2025.
