RCVS celebrates Statutory Membership Exam success
On Thursday 29 October, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) held a ceremony for 25 veterinary professionals who recently passed the College’s Statutory Membership Exam.

The Statutory Membership Exam (Stat Exam) is taken by overseas veterinary surgeons who wish to practise in the UK, but whose original qualification is not recognised by the RCVS. The examination tests both knowledge and practical skills.
The veterinary surgeons attending the ceremony at the RCVS in London came from 15 different countries, across four continents. The ceremony welcomed the first set of candidates eligible to join the RCVS Register following a change to legislation in 2025.
Lizzie Lockett, CEO of the RCVS, explained to those in attendance: “2026 is the first year we’ve experienced the positive impact of the recent changes to the Stat Exam rules. Today demonstrates the real and immediate benefit of the rule change, enabling capable candidates to progress more efficiently, while continuing to meet the high standards expected of the profession.”
Lizzie continued: “The Stat Exam is challenging, but for good reason: we need to be sure that everyone who joins our Register is fit to practise veterinary medicine in the UK, has the necessary skills and competencies, and knowledge of our Code of Professional Conduct.”
Before leading the successful candidates in taking the Declaration of Admission, the President of the RCVS, Tim Hutchinson, offered some reflections to those in attendance.
“Presiding at the ceremony is one of the best jobs we get to do as officers of the College, and I feel very fortunate to be able to share this special day with you and your friends and families. I would like to offer huge congratulations to all of you for the hard work, commitment, drive and determination that you have shown.”
After the candidates made the oath declaration, the College held a reception for the successful candidates and their families to celebrate their achievement.
Speaking to the RCVS after the ceremony, Moazzam Jamil, a veterinary surgeon from Pakistan who relocated to the UK in 2024, highlighted the significance of becoming an MRCVS: “I have found a very good job already; it also allows me to pursue my interests and refine my skills while in the UK. So, I think it’s a great blessing and great opportunity for me.”
On the examinations themselves, Ahmed Magdy, a vet from Egypt who is also partially deaf, commented: “I found the process easy to follow. The guidance provided me with all the information I needed and the examiners were considerate and helpful.”
