A curriculum for specialty training in veterinary primary care

Consultation is now open on proposals for a specialty training programme in veterinary primary care. The development of the detailed curriculum stems from the work of the RCVS’ Veterinary Clinical Career Paths (VCCP) project, launched in 2024, with the aim of expanding and diversifying the career options available to the profession.

Using insights gained from a wide range of stakeholder engagement events held throughout the first year of the project, the proposal has been developed by the VCCP working group - comprising advanced practitioners, specialists, rural practitioners, new graduates and representatives from different areas of practice - headed up by Professor Nick Cooper, President of the Academy of Medical Educators.

While this consultation is focussed on veterinary surgeons, the RCVS is also seeking feedback from other members of the veterinary team and undergraduate veterinary students. An email with a link to the survey was sent to RCVS members on Monday 2 November 2026. The deadline to respond is 5pm on Monday 30 November 2026.

The curriculum document and survey is available to view below.
