Become a successful mentor with the RCVS Academy
In this month's RCVS Academy update, the RCVS Academy team highlight their 'Mentorship' course - supporting you to successfully support graduate veterinary surgeons, newly qualified veterinary nurses, and student veterinary nurses as they take on new roles and responsibilities.
- Date Published:
During the summer, many practices will be preparing for new starters to join their team.
Whether you're welcoming a graduate veterinary surgeon, newly qualified veterinary nurse or student nurse to your team, developing your mentoring skills will be essential to support and guide their professional development. As a successful mentor, you will be able to communicate effectively to establish your mentee’s needs and goals, along with applying communication techniques and constructive feedback to optimise their development. Collaborating effectively with your new starter will create a positive mentoring relationship and promote autonomy.
The RCVS Academy course ‘Mentorship’, aimed at both veterinary surgeon and veterinary nurse mentors, will help you implement strategies to build an effective mentorship and identify mentoring requirements for specific career stages. Split into four modules, the course will equip you with the tools and skills that can be applied across a range of clinical and non-clinical settings.
Complementary to the Academy’s courses, the RCVS Academy Live sessions provide short, interactive, and highly engaging learning, offering plenty of opportunities for questions and lively discussion with peers. Throughout September, Academy Live sessions will be taking place on the following topics:
- Progressing your VN career – Wednesday 9 September 1pm
- Returning to practice – Thursday 17 September 1pm
- Introduction to mentorship – Wednesday 23 September 1pm
- Welcoming returners – Monday 28 September 1pm
Academy Live sessions are based on existing Academy courses. If you would like to complete any of the courses ahead of these sessions, please visit the RCVS Academy and review the courses in the ‘Leadership & Coaching’ and ‘Career Support’ categories.
All courses are free to complete, and you can log in using your MyRCVS login details.
