Riding Establishments Subcommittee

The Riding Establishments Subcommittee maintains the list of riding establishment inspectors (the Inspectorate), setting standards for their admission and retention on the list. The subcommittee is also responsible for ensuring, as far as possible, a competent and uniform inspection process applicable to all riding establishments in the United Kingdom.

Terms of reference

  1. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee shall report to RCVS Council through the Standards Committee.
  2. The RCVS Operational Board shall approve the setting up of the Riding Establishments Subcommittee and shall determine its membership, including appointing the Chair.
  3. The RCVS Operational Board shall review the membership of the Riding Establishments Subcommittee every five years or more frequently as considered necessary.
  4. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee shall approve, with BEVA, the contents of the Riding Establishments Training and Induction Course and attend the course as necessary. In return, the Riding Establishments Subcommittee will expect BEVA to assist in organising, promoting, and supporting the course, and to include this in the organisation’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.
  5. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee is charged with responsibility for maintaining the list of riding establishment inspectors, setting standards for their admission and retention on the list. The subcommittee is also responsible for ensuring, as far as possible, a competent and uniform inspection process applicable to all riding establishments in the United Kingdom.
  6. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee shall assist the RCVS with website and newsletter content and other communications relevant to work of the subcommittee or the Inspectorate.
  7. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee shall also assist the RCVS with enquiries about relevant matters from veterinary surgeons, members of the Inspectorate, the Equine Sector Council, proprietors of riding establishments, local authorities, and members of the public.
  8. The Riding Establishments Subcommittee shall liaise, as necessary, with interested parties within the Equine Sector Council including the British Horse Society (BHS), the Donkey Sanctuary, and the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS). This list is not exhaustive and any relevant organisation that wishes to be included shall be at the discretion of the Riding Establishments Subcommittee.
