About the Practice Standards Scheme
This section explains the Practice Standards Scheme and how it operates to ensure veterinary practices across the UK uphold the highest standards of care.
The RCVS is the national body responsible for veterinary standards; we support veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and practices in doing their best for the animals in their care.
Our Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) goes beyond basic legal requirements to help UK practices achieve the highest standards of care and continually improve. Currently, around 69% of veterinary practices in the UK have chosen to be accredited through the PSS.
Recognising accredited practices
PSS-accredited vet practices can display the RCVS accredited practice logo. This helps animal owners easily identify which practices in their local area meet our high standards.
Since 2011, we have used this blue logo. Some practices may still display our old logo.
If you would like to check whether a practice is accredited, you can use our Find a Vet service.
Holding high standards
The PSS assessment is every four years, with periodical spot checks. Core standards must be met, including for hygiene, 24-hour emergency cover, staff training, equipment, and cost estimation procedures.
