RCVS Academy launches new course for SVNs stepping into clinical practice
Starting in clinical practice is a significant milestone for student veterinary nurses (SVNs), whether as part of employment or during clinical placement. It is a key step towards becoming a confident and capable veterinary professional.

To support this transition, the RCVS Academy has launched a new course, ‘SVN: Stepping into practice’. The course is designed to help SVNs prepare for and make the most of this valuable learning experience, offering guidance on what to expect and how to succeed.
The course equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to thrive in a clinical environment. It also explores how clinical training connects their theoretical learning to real-world veterinary work, forming an essential part of their journey toward qualification.
In addition, the course outlines professional responsibilities and expectations, and the support available to SVNs during their time in clinical practice. By the end of the course, learners should feel prepared, supported, and ready to contribute meaningfully to the veterinary team.
Tori Thornton, Qualifications Assessor in our Veterinary Nursing Team, said, “We appreciate that the transition into practice can be challenging. This course clearly sets out the professional expectations, responsibilities, and support available to students, helping them feel reassured and ready to contribute positively as members of the veterinary team.”
The launch coincides with Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), which takes place throughout May and is led by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). The campaign celebrates the veterinary nursing profession and raises awareness of its vital contribution to animal health and welfare. This year’s theme is ‘compassion and empathy’, reflecting on the dedication and passion required to train and practise as a veterinary nurse.
Throughout May, the RCVS Academy will be sharing updates on social media to highlight a range of courses available on the Academy for both student and registered veterinary nurses.
