Dr Abbie Calow

BVetMed MRCVS
Dr Abbie Callow

Biography

Abbie graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2018 and started her career as an equine ambulatory vet in the Home Counties.

With a view to expanding her skillset and versatility, in 2020 Abbie transitioned to small animal first-opinion practice, while continuing to locum as an equine vet at weekends. She became a full-time locum veterinary surgeon in 2021. Abbie works across small animal and equine first-opinion practice, as well as out-of-hours services.

She takes pride in being a first-opinion vet, believing that gold-standard care means doing your best for the pet and owner in front of you. One of the highlights of her work as a locum is visiting a variety of practices, experiencing diverse working cultures, and connecting with new people.

Abbie has a passion for teaching and mentors for the BVA Grads to Vets mentoring programme as well as teaching client education courses which provide owner training in equine first aid and care.

Outside of practice, Abbie is a keen baker and, in addition to her regular bakes, makes one wedding cake per year for a close friend or relative. She owns two horses who are now in later life but still enjoy ridden work. On her days off, you will usually find Abbie out in the countryside hiking or spending time with her wonderfully large family. Abbie recently climbed Crib Goch in Snowdonia National Park and looks forward to completing the Three Peaks Challenge next year.
