Matthews, Jacqueline

Jacqui is a veterinary scientist who develops and translates research to improve current, and develop new, tools to improve helminth control in ruminants and equids. After qualifying as veterinarian, she worked in academia for >25 years, leading interdisciplinary projects focused on vaccines and diagnostics. She held tenured positions at Glasgow, Liverpool, and Edinburgh vet schools, and Moredun Research Institute. During this time, she delivered under/post-graduate teaching, was awarded >£13M in competitive research funding and has published >160 peer-reviewed papers, as well as patents and lay articles.
One of her inventions, a test for equine small redworm, was commercialised by Austin Davis Biologics in 2019. That year, she moved to Roslin Technologies, a University of Edinburgh joint venture, where, as CSO, she shaped the R&D portfolio, providing scientific leadership for its £11M Series A fundraise, won >£2M in competitive funding and industry innovation awards.
In 2022, she returned to parasitology as Austin Davis Biologics’ Director of Veterinary Science, where she oversees the company’s R&D programme, researching optimal use of its diagnostics to support evidence based helminth control and leading collaborative research to develop new diagnostics to support animal health. She has/had several committee/board roles relating to research peer review, veterinary medicines policy and animal welfare.
