From 1 April 2009, veterinary practice premises have had to be registered in order for veterinary surgeons to supply medicines from them.
The purpose of the Register is to enable the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) to fulfil its obligations under European law to maintain and improve traceability of, and accountability for, veterinary medicines. Registered premises are inspected by the VMD.
We hold the Register of Veterinary Practice Premises on behalf of the VMD.
There is an annual fee for renewal or registration of veterinary practice premises. Please see our fees page.
Renewal is due on 1 April each year and an invoice will be issued for payment shortly before the due date to those practice premises which are on the Register. You can download the Practice Premises Application Form from the 'Related documents' box, top right.
The annual fee for accredited practice premises includes the annual Register of Veterinary Practice Premises fee. Such premises are not subject to routine inspection from the VMD, as the Scheme’s standards meet the VMD’s inspection criteria.
Application instructions
There is an initial registration fee payable for each premises to be registered, which covers the registration until the next renewal date (1 April) each year. You must submit your payment when you return the application form.
For initial registration, payment should be made by cheque, payable to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Forms and payment should be returned to:
Registration Department
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
Belgravia House
62-64 Horseferry Road
London
SW1P 2AF
If you move premises, or open new premises, a new application form must be submitted for those premises and the fee must also be paid.
Information regarding the types of premises which require registration may be viewed on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
On the application form there is a ‘Statutory Registration’ section, which must be fully completed for all premises requiring registration.
The section called ‘Additional Practice Information’ gathers information on a voluntary basis relating to entries in our online search tool Find a Vet and the Practice Standards Scheme.
Should you wish to apply to join the Practice Standards Scheme and/or to have your practice premises details included in Find a Vet, you should complete and return the relevant parts of the form.
Premises accredited under the PSS pay an annual fee that incorporates the annual fees for registration of premises and routine inspection costs, in line with the rules of the Scheme; inspections for PSS premises are undertaken by RCVS inspectors, not those of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.
If you have more than one premises linked to your practice group, you can choose to have future annual invoices and data checks sent to a single billing address. If you do not indicate where you wish the invoice to be sent, it will be sent to each individual premises address.
For any queries, please contact the Practice Standards Department.
