Welcome to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

Who can register?

Veterinary nurses

If you are a veterinary nurse and wish to register, please follow the appropriate link below:

Veterinary surgeons

Veterinary surgeons applying to register are asked to contact the RCVS at least 8 weeks before starting work in the UK, or as soon as possible, to allow enough time to complete the registration process.

Statutory framework for the RCVS registration of veterinary surgeons

The entitlement to be registered as a member of the RCVS is determined by the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.

Only those registered with us may practise veterinary surgery in the UK. Applicants must have the requisite knowledge and skill to do so, and this must meet or exceed the minimum EU training requirements.

1.    EU member state applicants

If you have a recognised qualification and you are national of, or a European Union Rights Entitled Person (previously known as Community Rights Entitled Person) from, an EU member state (including Switzerland) then you may be eligible to register under the Registration of EU Graduates Directive 2005/36/EC.

For a list of qualifications currently recognised from countries, please see the table below.

You can view a list of EAEVE visitation reports, on the EAEVE website.

2.    Foreign and Commonwealth applicants

Graduates with qualifications recognised by RCVS Council, which are also shown to meet the minimum EU training requirements for practice only within the United Kingdom, may be eligible to register with the RCVS under the Commonwealth Registration or USA and Canada Registration provisions.

For a list of qualifications currently recognised from countries, please see the table below.

3.    Qualifications not recognised by RCVS

Graduates of veterinary schools and colleges from a country that is not listed in the table below, and non-EU nationals or those without a European Union rights entitlement and who hold EU degrees, are normally required to sit and pass the RCVS Statutory Examination for Membership. For more information, please contact a member of the Education Department on 020 7202 0705 or 020 7202 0791 or by emailing rcvsexam@rcvs.org.uk.

The nationality of non-EU applicants is not a factor in determining eligibility to be registered except in relation to those with EU qualifications. It is important to note that all registrations and applicants with EU qualifications must be nationals of an EU member state or be European Union Rights Entitled Persons (EUREPs).

4.    Restricted (temporary) registration

In exceptional circumstances, veterinary surgeons who are ineligible for registration in the UK, may be granted restricted (temporary) registration in order that they can carry out specific veterinary-related activities in a restricted capacity.

5.    Visiting veterinary surgeons

Under restricted conditions, visiting veterinary surgeons from relevant EU member states can make an application to register to provide services on a temporary and occasional basis in the UK without being a member of the RCVS.

For more information please contact a member of the Registration Department on 020 7202 0707 or by emailing registration@rcvs.org.uk.

The qualifications recognised in order to register with the RCVS are as follows:
