RCVS Trust lends history to racing exhibition

The RCVS Trust has received an unusual request to loan a 1912 edition of Bloodstock Breeders to a National Trust exhibition ‘Cardiacs Beware: the Rothschilds in Racing’, held at Waddeston Manor in Buckinghamshire until the end of the year.

The edition tells the story of Bronzino, a stallion said in his day to be the highest-class horse ever shipped to stud in Australia.

National Trust staff had been searching for an undamaged copy for part of the exhibition when they stumbled across a copy in the RCVS Trust Library’s catalogue.

Clare Boulton, RCVS Trust Librarian, said: “We have a collection of over 28,000 texts including an archive of antiquarian books and were glad to be able to help out with this unusual request.

"There is an emphasis on equine medicine in earlier books, which gives insight into the value horses have held through the ages.”

Diana Stone, Assistant Curator of the exhibition said: “It is fantastic to have this edition as a cornerstone for the display, as there is very little information elsewhere about the story – we’re very grateful to the RCVS Trust.”

The exhibition ‘Cardiacs Beware: the Rothschilds in Racing’, will run throughout 2009.
