Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP)
The Veterinary Graduate Development Programme, VetGDP, provides an effective period of workplace-based support for all veterinary graduates as they begin their first role in practice. By focusing on the development of their clinical and professional capabilities, the aim is for graduates to become competent, resilient members of the veterinary team.
Developed after consultation with the UK veterinary professions, the VetGDP recognises that while graduates are qualified vets, a period of structured support in the workplace can help their professional development, reduce anxiety and build lasting confidence.
Core to VetGDP are trained VetGDP Advisers, who work on a one-to-one basis with veterinary graduates to provide support in the workplace.
Practices or other workplaces wishing to employ veterinary graduates must become an RCVS Approved Graduate Development Practice, to ensure that graduates receive the developmental support required.
Any qualified vets who have been off the UK-Practising Register for more than five years will also be required to undertake VetGDP, although they may be able to apply for exemption in some circumstances. Overseas vets who have worked abroad since graduating and return to the UK with less than one year's experience in a role similar to the one being undertaken here will also need to complete the VetGDP.
