Welcome to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

Prof Joanna S Price BSc BVSc PhD MRCVS

Biography

A portrait image of Joanna Price

Jo graduated with a BVSc from the University of Bristol in 1983, having also intercalated in Anatomical Science.

After two years working in equine practice in Berkshire, she worked as a small animal vet in Singapore, travelled in South East Asia and worked as a small animal and equine locum, before returning to equine practice.

However, academia beckoned and after working as a lecturer in Veterinary Anatomy at Bristol, she studied for a PhD at the University of Sheffield on deer antler regeneration, funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Her subsequent Wellcome-funded postdoctoral research on bone’s adaptation to mechanical loading was carried out at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). She then continued with her research on antler regeneration at University College London, having been awarded a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowship.

Alongside her more fundamental research, Jo for many years also worked on equine musculoskeletal diseases having a particular interest in biomarkers and fracture prevention.

In 2000 Jo finally got a ‘proper job, returning to the RVC as a senior lecturer in Veterinary Anatomy. Jo was appointed as Professor and Head of the RVC‘s Veterinary Basic Science Department in 2005, before moving to Bristol in 2009 to become Head of School.

The last three years have seen the School go through a period of significant change and renewal, which includes development of a new BVSc curriculum. The demands of the ‘day job‘ means that Jo‘s research now focuses on the mechanisms by which bone responds to its mechanical environment, in particular the role of sex steroids and the effect of ageing.

Outside of academic life, Jo’s interests are horse riding (one day eventing), skiing, gardening and sailing.
