Modular certificatesThe modular certificate scheme was introduced in 2007. The modular certificate scheme is a new, more flexible approach to veterinary post-graduate qualifications. It offers manageably-sized modules, so candidates can collect credits as they are achieved, even if their interests or practice area subsequently change. The modular certificate scheme is more appropriate, accessible and attainable than traditional end-loaded examinations, for practising veterinarians working in a wide range of practice areas. The modular certificate structure leads to qualifications entitled Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP). The Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice will eventually replace the existing certificates for all subjects, and offer a number of new options too, such as emergency critical care. Whereas the 'old' RCVS certificates were all examined by RCVS appointed examiners, under the new system assessment for individual modules will be undertaken under the aegis of universities which the RCVS will accredit for the purpose. RCVS has invited universities (not just veterinary schools) to seek accreditation to assess modules towards the CertAVP qualification. Universities may submit applications for accreditation at any time. Accreditation is open to all bodies with degree-awarding powers in the UK. Although it may take some time for a full range of courses and assessment routes to be developed across the country, we expect there to be a variety of approaches provided over time, both to cover individual modules and to cover groups of modules where there is a market for particular combinations.
