Dr Arun Midha


Arun read Politics at Swansea University before gaining a diploma in Social Studies at Oxford University (Exeter College). He was awarded an MBA from Cardiff University, and also a PhD from Swansea University.

He began his career with Lloyds Bank on its Graduate entry scheme and then took the role of Commerce and Industry Advisor with the Health Promotion Authority for Wales. Arun joined the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1994 as Assistant Director of the Welsh Combined Centres for Public Health also managing the public health medicine specialist registrar training scheme in Wales. His most recent executive role was Director of Strategy and Resources involving junior doctor and dentist training in Wales. 

Arun has built a portfolio of non-executive and lay member roles in the fields of regulation, standards, governance, health and education. He is currently Lay member on the Select Committee on Standards (House of Commons), Chair of Retrospective Continuing Healthcare Reviews in Wales, member of Qualifications Wales, Lay member of the Professional Conduct Committee (Bar Standard Board) and a Lay member of the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Recent roles have included Lay member of the General Medical Council, where he was Chair of Resources and member of the Education Committee and a lay screener assessing complaints against Doctors. He was also an independent member of the Welsh Health and Social Services Ministerial National Advisory Board and a Board Member of the Welsh Language Board.

Arun has served as a Justice of the Peace and was also High Sheriff of South Glamorgan in 2012. He is a Governor of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr and an Assessor of the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Further and Higher Education.

He has been a Welsh Rugby Union referee and is currently a trustee and honorary secretary of the Wales Rugby Charitable Trust. Arun is an active supporter of the Charities Save the Children and Street Child United. He is also a season ticket holder with Swansea City FC.
