Beverley Cottrell graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1985 as one of several mature students in her year.

Her first job was at the Animal Health Trust as a trainee ophthalmologist, working under the instruction of the inimitable Keith Barnett.

In 1987 she passed the (old style) Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology and in 1990 bought a hospital-standard practice in the village where she lived in Cambridgeshire.

Four children and ten years later, she sold the practice and now works as a peripatetic ophthalmologist, mainly involved in BVA eye testing under the Canine Health Schemes.

She is currently a member of the BVA Eye Panel Working Party.

In 2008 Beverley completed a Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Hertfordshire. In October 2009 she was called to the Bar by Middle Temple, after passing the Bar Vocational Course at City University.

She completed pupillage at Lamb Building, Temple in 2011 and is now a practising barrister with Clerksroom. She is an appointed barrister member of the Qualifications Committee of the Bar Standards Board and a qualified mediator.

Beverley was elected to RCVS Council in 2007, appointed to the Disciplinary Committee in 2008 and was Vice-Chairman from 2009 to 2012.

In 2011 she was re-elected to Council for a four-year term, but was obliged to step down in 2013 after she was appointed to the new independent Disciplinary Committee.
