Retention fee FAQs
The questions on this page relate to new measures to help UK-practising veterinary surgeons spread the cost of their annual renewal fees over the course of the calendar year in light of the impact of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

Veterinary surgeons registered as UK-practising members may opt to pay 50% of the fee by 30 April 2020, a further 25% by 30 September 2020 and the final 25% by 31 December 2020.

Please log in to My Account on the RCVS website, go to online payment, and on the fees due page is an option to pay 50%. (This will only apply if the total amount due is in excess of £100)

If you wish to pay the fee by instalments then you can do this online via My Account on the RCVS website, by credit card, debit card. Alternatively, you can pay by online bank transfer using the following details:

Unfortunately, you cannot pay in instalments by Direct Debit (please see Q4 about Direct Debits)

If you have a Direct Debit set up, please cancel this through My Account, and then select the option to pay the first instalment of 50%. (Please see Q3 for payment method options.)
NB We have deferred Direct Debit payments for 10-14 days from 1 April 2020 to allow time for you to cancel your Direct Debit should you choose to.

We will send reminders about each fee instalment to the email address we have on your record, but it will be your responsibility to ensure the remaining balance is paid.

If your employer has yet to pay your retention fee, they can pay 50% of the fee due by 30 April 2020, with a further 25% by 30 September 2020 and the final 25% instalment by 31 December 2020.

If you can’t pay one or both of the next two instalments due, then we will change your registration category to ‘non-practising’ and ask you to confirm that you are no longer practising.

The amount due or, if you are eligible, the refund due will be calculated on the amount you have already paid and the balance due for the relevant category of membership.

Yes. If you want to change to paying by instalments, please email refunds@rcvs.org.uk.
Please note, these temporary measures only affect the timing of the payments and not the total amount due.

When you login to My Account, do not select the option to pay 50%. Simply pay your fee in full as usual.

If you have not paid 50% by the end of April, you will need to pay the full fee due between the 1 May and the 30 May in order for your name to remain on the Register.
Unfortunately, if you have not paid 50% by the end of April, and then do not pay the full fee by the end of May, your name will be removed from the Register and you will no longer be entitled to practise.

No. The higher fee which usually applies for late payments made between 1 May and 30 May are not being applied to any category of membership this year.
