Survey of the Veterinary and Veterinary Nurse Professions 2024

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is conducting a new round of the Survey of the Profession. The survey is carried out every four to five years, most recently in 2019. The surveys will be carried out by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), a leading independent centre for research and evidence-based consultancy in employment and related areas.

Why is this research being conducted?

The aim of the survey is to provide vital information and data that is used to inform and formulate policy, not only by the RCVS, but also by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), its agencies and other veterinary bodies and stakeholders.

Why should I complete the survey?

While participating in the survey is completely voluntary, it is more important than ever that the voices of veterinary professionals in all parts of the UK, from all backgrounds, of all ages and working in all different disciplines, feed into this research.

Information from the last survey was used to inform our current strategic plan, including our aim to be a compassionate regulator, ongoing support for Mind Matters, and a focus on the workforce. Crucially, this year’s veterinary and veterinary nurse surveys will be informing the forthcoming RCVS Strategic Plan 2025 – 2029.

Who is eligible to complete the survey?

All qualified veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses registered with the RCVS can take part, including retired, overseas, and non-practising veterinary surgeons, and veterinary nurses in their Period of Supervised Practice.

Do I have to take part?

The survey is voluntary, and participants are not required to answer every question.

Can we use mobile phones to do the survey?

Yes, the survey can be completed on a mobile device, tablet, or desktop computer.

Who will have access to the research data?

Personal data will be treated in accordance with GDPR legislation. All responses will be anonymised and completely confidential, and results will only be analysed and reported at a level that does not allow identification of individuals in any way.

The IES will produce a report with key research findings for the RCVS after the survey has closed. An anonymous dataset will also be shared with the Research Team at the RCVS, to enable the RCVS to make full use of this rich data source and answer current and future research questions.

If you would like to know more about the how the research data will be treated and processed, please see the full Privacy Notice

How can I participate?

The survey is live now and will remain open until 5pm on 16 February 2023. Registered veterinary professionals will receive an email invite from the RCVS.
