Senior Vice-President receives BSAVA Amoroso Award

19 April 2011

The Senior Vice-President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), Professor Sandy Trees, was on the 31 March awarded the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) Amoroso Award for major contributions to the understanding of protozoal parasite infections in dogs.

“I am thrilled to have been given this award by my clinical peers,” said Sandy. “It is particularly rewarding that the research done by our group at the University of Liverpool into neosporosis – a completely unrecognised disease 23 years ago – has helped clinical practice and improved animal health.”

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite which causes neonatal paralysis in dogs. It is now recognised globally as a common and widespread pathogen.  Early diagnosis and veterinary treatment is important for dogs to recover.

The award was presented to Sandy at the annual congress of the BSAVA, held in Birmingham.  It is instituted in memory of the late Professor EC Amoroso of the Royal Veterinary College, and presented for outstanding contributions to small animal studies by a non-clinical member of university staff.
