Penny Howe

Biography

RCVS Preliminary Investigation Committee Member, Penny HowePenny was born and grew up in Edinburgh. She studied law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, and was called to the Bar in 1991.

She is a member of Inner Temple, and practises from Pump Court Chambers in London. In 1998, she obtained an LLM which she undertook part-time alongside her practice.

In the early part of her career, Penny undertook a broad mix of civil and criminal work before specialising in family law and, in particular, cases that concern child protection and adoption.

She appears regularly in the High Court and County Court and represents parents, local authorities and children in proceedings where serious child abuse, including murder or grievous bodily harm, or other ill treatment or neglect is alleged.

In 1996, Penny took a 'year out' and was legal officer for the Society of London Theatre, advising theatre managers and producers on all manner of civil, contractual and employment issues, which provided a welcome contrast to her work at the Bar.

Penny is married, and has two daughters now aged eight and six and a beloved dog. She lives in Wimbledon. She loves to run and to ski, and spends as much time as possible in Scotland, where she enjoys walking in the Highlands.

Penny is also a trustee of Adoption UK, which is the UK’s leading support charity for adopters.
